Global Conflicts Make Air Logistics More Complex and Expensive
Proliferating conflict zones are an increasing burden on airlines. During the Iran-Israel war, airlines cancelled flights over much of the region. Amid missile strikes, airlines routed north via the Caspian Sea or south via Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Since the ceasefire, flights have gradually resumed, but the region remains unstable.
GPS interference around political hotspots can send commercial airliners off course, which is also a growing issue for commercial aviation. Ground-based GPS systems “spoof” data: SkAI, a Swiss company that runs a GPS disruption map, said it had observed more than 150 aircraft spoofed in 24 hours over the Persian Gulf.
With Russian and Ukrainian airspace also closed for most airlines, the Middle East is an important route for flights between Europe and Asia. Now the stability of the routes through this region can be disrupted at any time.
